Montana Electric Cooperative Association (MECA) will not participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. due to many concerns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This means Flathead Electric Co-op will not send students to Washington DC in 2021. In lieu of the Youth Tour, Flathead Electric and MECA will offer a different opportunity for local students.
Flathead Electric Co-op is offering an essay contest for five $1,000 one-time scholarships to high school sophomores or juniors from schools in the Flathead Electric service territory who answer the essay question: How has reliable electricity benefited you and your community through the COVID-19 pandemic?
The student’s parent or guardian must be served by Flathead Electric Cooperative.
The top winning essay will be submitted for an additional chance at a one-time $2,500 scholarship sponsored by MECA.
Please complete the online application below. Upon completion, essays will be scored, and five winners will be chosen for a one-time scholarship award of $1,000 for any in-state Montana College, University or trade school. Scholarship dollars will be held at Flathead Electric Co-op until the student declares a college choice, at which point funds will be sent to the school.
Applicants will be judged on the following categories:
- 70% Content (thoughtful and original ideas, demonstrated understanding of topic, supporting evidence)
- 30% Presentation (quality of writing, organization, grammar, spelling)
